You have an hour before your guests arrive; the roast is in the oven, the wine is chilling, and you are staring at a stack of dinnerware and flatware wondering how you’ll make your table special. We’re here with some great, easy-to-remember tips to help you quickly set a beautiful table.
Can’t decide between a tablecloth and a set of placemats? Don’t be afraid to use both! Play around with patterns and shapes to find a beautiful combination that will give your table an extra special touch.
Setting your flatware is as easy as counting to five! The forks should be placed on the left side of the plate – fork and left both have four letters. Knife, spoon, and right, all five-letter words, remind us which utensils belong on the right side! Have fun with the placement of the napkin. For example, the rooster here is highlighted by the placement of the napkin to the side of the plate. A napkin atop a teacup or soup bowl adds a fun whimsical touch!
On to the age-old question of “Is this my water or yours?” Here’s a helpful hint for dealing with this dilemma – form a circle with your pointer finger and thumb. Notice that your left hand now forms a “b” and your right hand forms a “d“. Now you’ll never forget that the bread plates go on the left side, and the drinking glasses go on the right!
Adding a centerpiece is a great way to add a personal touch to your table, and a few guidelines will help you choose the perfect focal point. If you are setting a long rectangular table, aim to put unique pieces down the length of the table; this gives each guest a front-row seat to your style and flair. To ensure that all guests can see each other, your floral centerpieces should either be shorter than the distance between your elbow and fingers, or longer than distance of your entire arm.
